WHO Collaborating Centre (WHOCC) in Traditional Medicine (Yoga)

Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), New Delhi has been designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Traditional Medicine (Yoga) from April, 2013. As a WHO Collaborating Centre            in Traditional Medicine (Yoga) institute serving as Yoga resource center for information exchange on Yoga within the country and for other countries, assisting and working with WHO in developing standards for promoting rational use of Yoga, developing  educational and practice materials for advocating evidence-based use of Yoga, and conducted  customized training programs for national and international health professionals and WHO fellows about the utility of Yoga in health promotion.

Support WHO in the development of WHO Benchmarks for training in Yoga:

 

m-Yoga on Common Yoga Protocol for General Wellness

 

In View of supporting WHO in the development of WHO Benchmarks for Training in Yoga, Director, MDNIY has been assisting WHO in drafting benchmarks for training in Yoga. WHO's promotion of Digital health and telemedicine programme to reach maximum population and to promote Yoga as one of the component of physical activity Under this, MDNIY, being a WHO CC, proposed and organized a brainstorming session to have views of various international and national Yoga expert regarding a digital programme for propagating the correct and appropriate use of Yoga, which can be functional from a mobile platform (mYoga) would be most useful global public good and should be developed and implemented. After various level national and international meetings with experts, a working group formed to finalize mYoga on Common Yoga Protocol for General Wellness Handbook.

 

A Donor agreement was signed between Government of India and WHO to   implement mYoga-anmhealth program for Yoga in this regard. Meeting to “Execute plan of “m-Yoga on Common Yoga Protocol for General Wellness” was held on 19th– 20thSeptember 2019 at MDNIY, New Delhi, under the Chairmanship of Joint Secretary (PNRK), Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.

 

 

 

Regular meetings and discussion with Dr Geetha Krishnan, Technical Officer (Traditional Medicine), WHO-HQ, regarding mYoga Hand book. A Document on “Common Yoga Protocol for General Wellness” has been finalized in consultation with International experts and a Working Group. As per the comments and suggestion the video, audio and documents for “m-Yoga on Common Yoga Protocol for General Wellness” was prepared and shared with international and national experts for the peer review.

WHO Technical Review meeting for mYoga Application was organized on 13-14 March 2020 through video conference at Le meridian, New Delhi. Yoga Experts from EURO, AMRO, WPRO and SEARO regions of WHO were participated. In this meeting comments from international and national experts regarding m-Yoga on Common Yoga Protocol for General Wellness” video, audio and documents were discussed and finalized, Video and audio version editing in process.

Development of evidence-based Yoga training modules for management of Non-Communicable Diseases:

 

Evidence-based Yoga training modules for management of Noncommunicable Diseases: Total 5 Yoga protocols as below have been prepared: (1) Bronchial Asthma (2) Cancer (3) Stroke (4) Hypertension (5) Diabetes Mellitus and finalized after expert's review and comments. Those modules also have made significant contribution to development of mYoga, which is planned to be completed this year, 2020, for further launching at WHO website.

 

·        Each module of booklet consists of 50 pages approx. 

·        Target Audience are Yoga Teachers, Yoga Therapists and Yoga professionals.

·        These modules will be circulated in public domain in PDF format and printed format. 

                                                              

Conducting regular systematic literature review on research in Yoga with focus on Non-Communicable Diseases and develop a short summary paper on findings of available evidences and gaps in research, and disseminate it to Member states:

 

In view of conducting regular systematic literature review on research in Yoga, with focus on Noncommunicable Diseases, research papers published in indexed, peer reviewed journals were identified for the year 2019-20. Total 24 papers on Yoga for Non communicable diseases like cardio vascular diseases, obesity, diabetes etc, were selected. On the basis of the research articles, literature, review is being submitted. The literature review paper will be submitted in May/June 2020.
